Expert Insights: Yacht Helideck Ops

Can any yacht accommodate a helicopter landing in Turkey?
Not every vessel is technically cleared for a landing. A yacht must have a certified helideck or a reinforced “touch-and-go” area. At VIPSTAR® Aviation, our operations team performs a prior technical review of your yacht’s Helideck Monitoring System (HMS) and fire-fighting capabilities. If your vessel is not suitable, we coordinate a seamless transfer to the nearest seaside heliport.

Why are “Twin-Engine” helicopters mandatory for yacht transfers?
Safety over open water is paramount. International aviation standards and VIPSTAR® protocols prioritize Twin-Engine helicopters (like the Airbus H145 and Agusta AW139) for offshore operations. In the unlikely event of one engine failing, a twin-engine aircraft can safely continue its flight. Single-engine helicopters are generally avoided for maritime transfers to ensure passenger security and insurance compliance.

How do you coordinate with the Yacht Captain regarding GPS?
Precision is our standard. Once booked, our dispatch office establishes a direct line with your Yacht Captain or ETO. We track the vessel’s live AIS (Automatic Identification System) data and receive real-time weather updates from the deck. This ensures our pilots have the exact relative wind speed and deck orientation for a perfect landing, even at anchor in remote bays.

What is the “Last-Mile” luggage protocol?
Helicopter luggage capacity is governed by weight and balance safety limits. For yacht transfers, we recommend soft-shell bags. If your luggage exceeds dimensions, VIPSTAR® provides a synchronized VIP Ground Luggage Sprint service. Your bags are transported by road and delivered to your yacht via a dedicated chase boat or tender.

Can we perform “Night Landings” on yachts?
Night landings on yachts are subject to strict CAA regulations and the specific lighting equipment of the vessel (certified HAPI/TLOF lighting). While we primarily conduct daylight operations for scenic value, our fleet is fully equipped for IFR (Instrument Flight Rules), provided the destination vessel meets international maritime night-landing standards.
